It seems that not a lot of people realize, except those living on Haldimand Road 17 in Cayuga, that there is a serious safety problem here. Trucks use this as a shortcut from Dunnville instead of Highway 3. The road has a sharp bend as you enter Cayuga and a lot of people do not slow down enough. Also, there is a crosswalk for J.L. Mitchener school just past the bend. This is a 50 zone but the averge speed is probably around 70. This is unacceptable. I have found out that there is no intention of council to eliminate the truck traffic from 17 through by-laws. I would rather see a centre median (here we go again!) as you enter Cayuga from 17 and at the intersection with Highway 3.
This means that there is no restrictions on the road for trucks, but it has become so difficult for them to make the turns, they probable won’t be able to make them at all, thus eliminating the heavy traffic from the road and enhancing the community at the same time.
Just the other day I witnessed a minivan that was obviously going to fast, miss the bend and end up in a front yard. What if the car had hit the house, or there were people out front? Does someone always have to get injured or die before preventive measures are taken?
