Last year on the election trail, I talked to people in Fisherville who had legitimate concerns with regards to speed in their town. The town is built around an intersection and the speed limit is 50. The speed limit increases to 80 BEFORE you are out of the residential area. The town has grown over the years, but the speed limits have not been moved out accordingly. This is an easy thing to fix, but it has not happened yet!
The 2nd issue consists of going faster than the posted speed limit. I know that this is a concern pretty much anywhere you go, but I think that traffic can be slowed down if there were centre medians in the residential area. This is an effective method as there is now something on the road which draws your attention and you are forced to slow down. Furthermore, it will add to the community as these medians can be used for (sponsored) flower beds. It may even be possible to install a roundabout, but this will depend on the volume and type of traffic. Large transport trucks will obviously have a problem.
This idea can be applied to many communities out in Haldimand County. South Cayuga, Rainham Centre, Byng etc. Speed has and will always be a concern, but we have to try new ideas to make our small communities a little bit safer for everyone.
South Cayuga has a serious problem with speeders. A house in South Cayuga was hit by a tanker truck a few years ago, what a mess, and an environmental disaster for the homeowner. Yet the police still do nothing, you rarely see an OPP car unless they are speeding to a call.
It is amazing that these issues still go unattended.
